Researching the Gallery:

An Active Learning Environment

The gallery is an opportunity for meaningful and layered learning for students of art, particularly those in Senior Cycle art who require a developed understanding and appreciation for the Visual Arts.


The gallery is the most popular exam question in the Appreciation of Art section of the Leaving Certificate written Art exam. Students who form an appreciation and personal opinions about Art will find benefit in all other areas of their Visual Arts studies.


To explore ways of embedding layers of learning from a gallery visit, back into the classroom, myself and a colleague, Aisling Flood, explored how we would bring themes discussed in the exhibition of Irish contemporary artist Dorothy Cross, into a new project that would relate to students with minimal adjustments depending on the group.
